The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS McFaul (DDG -74) and the Egyptian navy’s guided-missile frigate El Suez (F946) participated in a passing exercise (PASSEX), Feb. 24, 2019.

Cmdr. Janet Days, commanding officer of McFaul, welcomed the Egyptian frigate’s leadership aboard before the ships conducted an exchange of liaison officers and performed maneuvering drills. “This passing exercise was conducted to allow the U.S. Navy to continually build relationships through training, ensuring interoperability and theater security cooperation,” said Days. “Our desire is to continue to build relationships by fostering an environment of shared ideas and common goals.”

The McFaul’s Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) team also had the opportunity to work alongside Egyptian sailors to practice technique training. Shortly after, McFaul dropped a target in the water and both McFaul and El Suez took turns demonstrating their weapons capability by firing their guns. “It was a fun day,” said Days. “I look forward to seeing additional training opportunities presented. The Red Sea Navy staff were exceptional hosts and expressed a desire to work again with U.S. naval forces.”

The event concluded with an exchange of wardroom gifts between the maritime professionals. The Egyptian naval officers thanked their U.S. counterparts for the hospitality and wished them well on the rest of the deployment.

McFaul is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points. The U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations encompasses nearly 2.5 million square miles of water area and includes the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean. The region is comprised of 20 countries and includes three critical choke points at the Strait of Hormuz, the Suez Canal and the Strait of Bab-al-Mandeb at the southern tip of Yemen.
