Maintenance Marines work hard to keep tactical vehicles, aircraft, weapons and equipment in the fight. But there is another aspect of maintenance few people know about – maintenance management specialists.
Sgt. Sydnee McCabe is the maintenance management specialist non-commissioned officer for Naval Amphibious Force, Task Force 51/5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade. In her role, she provides timely guidance and assistance to the unit's equipment commodity section managers and maintenance personnel to ensure a systematic approach to maintenance operations of ground equipment. “My primary focus within TF 51/5’s area of responsibility is to analyze data and educate multiple subordinate units on materiel readiness,” said McCabe. “This directly affects the commander’s decision making when it comes to employment of the command’s capabilities,” said McCabe.
McCabe is responsible for reporting equipment readiness for more than 2,400 mission essential equipment from the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force-Crisis Response-Central Command, Amphibious Ready Groups, and Marine Expeditionary Units that rotate through TF 51/5 areas of responsibility. “With the 22nd MEU in our area of responsibility, I am currently working with them to get a breakdown by ship of all of mission essential equipment, authorized allowance, on-hand numbers as well as all equipment that is not mission ready so that I may collect, calculate, analyze and report maintenance readiness,” said McCabe.
TF 51/5 provides a breadth of capabilities that is unique within the naval service. The forces operate at sea, from the sea and ashore on a daily basis, and TF 51/5 provides a response capability unmatched across the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. “I enjoy the integrated Navy-Marine Corps team,” said McCabe. “I’ve learned a lot about the Navy and it is impressive how the two branches can come together for the sake of the mission. I think my favorite part about being in this position is the fact that we are dealing with real world scenarios and equipment that is forward deployed, [which is] very different from my experience stateside.”
McCabe has been in the Marine Corps for more than three years and a member of the TF 51/5’s integrated Navy-Marine Corps team for approximately nine months. “I’ve really enjoyed my time in Bahrain, getting to experience another region of the world and live in their environment,” said McCabe. “This was a rare opportunity that I am thankful I took advantage of and it is something that I won’t forget.”
A native of Phoenix, Arizona, McCabe spends a lot of her free time at the time gym. She is currently working on earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from University of Maryland University College.
