Guam-based Sailors spoke to students about professions available in the Navy during a career day at Jose L.G. Rios Middle School in Piti, Guam, Feb. 26. Sailors from Commander, Submarine Squadron Fifteen (COMSUBRON 15) attended the event to increase student awareness and interests in various career opportunities and encourage the children to plan their future by researching career choices.
Lt. j.g. Laurence Moore, the community relations coordinator for COMSUBRON15, said he and his colleagues enjoyed showing the students the different professions the Navy has to offer. "This was a great opportunity for our Sailors to show students the large amount of career opportunities available in the Navy" said Moore, a native of Houston. “Many students don’t realize that almost any job you can do in the civilian world, you can also do in the Navy.”
Service members also set up static displays, which included camera equipment, thermal imaging devices, firefighting equipment, and medical training aids to give the kids some hands-on experience with military equipment.
Fire Control Technician 2nd Class Robbie Robinson, a native of Baltimore, said he enjoyed being able to share his experiences with the students and to learn what career fields interested them. “This was a great opportunity to see what the students interests are,” said Robinson. “I hope we helped show the students the different opportunities they have to advance their career and their future.”
The career day was the 12th annual event for the middle school. COMSUBRON 15 is located at Polaris Point, Naval Base Guam in Apra Harbor, Guam. The squadron staff is responsible for providing training, material and personnel readiness support to the four Guam-based submarine commands.
